Roma have announced summer signing Rick Karsdorp has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and is now set to miss the remainder of the season.
Karsdorp made his long-awaited Roma debut against Crotone on Wednesday evening but was forced off with just eight minutes remaining after twisting his knee.
The Serie A giants were initially hopeful Karsdorp had only suffered ligament damage but further examinations revealed their worst fears.
“Having sustained suspected ligament damage, the player was subject to further examination during the night,” a statement read on the club’s official website.
“It was subsequently confirmed that he has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
“On Thursday afternoon specialist surgeon Professor Mariani will conduct further tests on the player, in order to establish a treatment procedure.”
Karsdorp joined Roma from Feyenoord over the summer but missed the start of the campaign through injury. The 22-year-old right-back has bags of potential but his nightmare start to life in Italy means he will not fully recover until next season.
In the last three Eredivisie campaigns, Karsdorp has provided more assists than any other defender (14).
