Rashford becomes sixth England player to withdraw through injury

Marcus Rashford is the sixth player to withdraw from Gareth Southgate’s England squad for matches against Czech Republic and Montenegro through injury, the Football Association has confirmed.

The 21-year-old has been nursing an ankle injury since Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool at the back end of February and has now returned to his club for further treatment.

Rashford is the sixth player from Southgate’s original squad to withdraw through injury, joining Luke Shaw, John Stones, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Fabian Delph and Trent Alexander-Arnold in returning to their respective clubs.

Southgate has already called up Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse and Chelsea teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi for their upcoming matches but will only consider drafting in a replacement for Rashford after Friday’s game with Czech Republic.

Rashford has been in fine form for United since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment as manager before Christmas, playing a direct hand in 10 goals in 18 matches under the Norwegian.
