Milan forward set for long injury lay-off

AC Milan will reportedly be without Mario Balotelli for up to three months with the Italian striker set to have surgery on a hernia this week, reports Gazzetta dello Sport.

Balotelli, 25, is currently on a season-long loan from Liverpool but has featured for Sinisa Mihajlovic’s men since the end of September.

The Italy international had been following a recovery plan, but it’s now thought his injury is worse than first thought and surgery is needed on his hernia that will put him out of action for at least three months.

The Italy international had been hoping to force his way into contention with Antonio Conte ahead of the European Championship’s next summer, but those ambitions will now be shelved as he looks to return to first-team action with Milan.
