German duo ruled out of Euro 2016

Germany’s hopes of following up World Cup success with Euro 2016 triumph have been served a blow after it was confirmed Sami Khedira and Mario Gomez would take no part in the rest of the tournament.

Gomez, 30, tore his hamstring in their quarter-final victory over Italy and leave Jogi Low with a selection dilemma up front following Mario Gotze’s underwhelming performances leading the line.

Germany will also be without Juventus midfielder Khedira, who was forced off in the 12th minute with an adductor muscle injury. Given Bastian Schweinsteiger – another doubt – has struggled for form and fitness since the start of last season, it’s hardly an ideal situation for Low ahead of their semi-final clash.
