West Ham midfielder agrees new long-term deal

West Ham United have announced Cheikhou Kouyate has signed a new long-term deal keeping the midfielder at the club until 2021.

Kouyate, 26, has taken like a duck to water since joining from Anderlecht at the start of last season and is one of the most underrated players currently plying their trade in the Premier League.

The Senegal international still had more than two years remaining on his current deal but West Ham have moved to secure his long-term services in the case of interest in the summer.

“I am happy to have renewed my contract with West Ham. I am very happy and would like to thank everybody here at the club, the manager, the fans and also my parents. I think that it is the start of the next chapter for us to go on and discover the new stadium,” Kouyate told the club’s official website.

“It means that the club trusts me and that means a lot for me. There is a lot of work for me still to do and I need to continue working hard and prepare for the move to the Olympic Stadium and most of all to keep on entertaining the fans.”

Kouyate is an imposing figure in the middle of the park who goes about his work without the adulation his performances deserve. He has also proven to be a versatile player who has dogged into the defence when required. Only two outfield players have featured in more minutes in the league this season for West Ham than Kouyate (2,236 mins).
