Everton have launched a club-record £40m bid for Swansea City star Gylfi Sigurdsson and hope to conclude a deal by the end of the week, reports The Daily Telegraph.
Sigurdsson has been earmarked as a top transfer target by Ronald Koeman, who has already spent in the region of £100m on new signings this summer, and Everton have not been put off in their pursuit despite the fact Swansea have slapped a £50m asking price on his head.
Leicester have already failed with a £40m bid for the Iceland international this summer but Everton are confident of pulling off a record breaking deal despite matching their Premier League counterparts with their opening bid.
Swansea are due to fly to America for their pre-season tour this morning but Sigurdsson has returned to Wales to thrash out talks with chairman Huw Jenkins in order to facilitate his exit from the club for a second time.
The 27-year-old enjoyed a stunning campaign for Swansea last season despite the fact Paul Clement’s side were battling for relegation for most of the year. Despite his failings at Tottenham, Everton are prepared to shatter their club-transfer record for a second time this summer having already signed Jordan Pickford from Sunderland for £30m.
Sigurdsson registered more assists from set-piece situations (8) than any player in the Premier League last season.
