Liverpool to rival Monaco for Spanish defender

Liverpool are prepared to rival French side Monaco in the race to sign Real Sociedad defender Diego Llorente, reports Spanish publication La Razon.

The Reds are aiming to add a new defender to the ranks this summer with Dejan Lovren expected to be sold off in the off-season.

And head coach Jurgen Klopp is hoping to bring in another centre-back to provide competition for Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

Llorente has been a key player for Real Sociedad in LaLiga this season, making 19 starts and returning a WhoScored rating of 6.58.

However, Monaco are also interested in the 26-year-old, who has been a fairly prominent feature in the Real Sociedad XI following his arrival from Malaga in 2017.

Liverpool boast the tightest defence in the Premier League this season, having shipped just 21 goals in 29 goals, before the Coronavirus pandemic curtailed action.

The league is hoping to return next month after clubs were given permission for players to return to training in small groups this week.

Liverpool currently lead the way in England's top tier as they sit 25 points clear of defending champions Manchester City, albeit having played a game more.
