Chelsea could be without No1 goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for a number of months after manager Jose Mourinho confirmed the Belgium international is set to undergo knee surgery.
Courtois, 23, damaged medial ligaments in his knee during training on Wednesday and Mourinho has called the news “ a big blow”.
“It is a big blow, it is not easy to have the best goalkeeper in the world injured,” the Chelsea boss is quoted in BBC Sport.
“I’m very sad for Thibaut and the team but we have a top keeper and Begovic will be in goal.”
Begovic, who joined the Premier League champions over the summer, wasn’t expected to see much playing time at Stamford Bridge this season, but has already featured in half of Chelsea’s league games this season (2).
With Courtois out injured for what could be a long period, Begovic could now find himself thrust into the limelight for an extended spell.
