Newcastle captain Lascelles signs new six-year deal

Newcastle have announced captain Jamaal Lascelles has put pen to paper on a new six-year deal running until 2024.

Lascelles only signed a contract extension 12 months ago but the Magpies have now agreed to prolong his stay by a further season.

The 24-year-old has developed into one of Newcastle’s best players since joining from Nottingham Forest in 2014 and has captained the club since the 2016/17 campaign.

Chelsea were briefly linked with a move for the powerful centre-back but Lascelles has opted to pledge his long-term future to St.James’ Park.

“I’m over the moon - it’s great news to be tied down to Newcastle for a long time. It’s pretty much all I ever wanted: playing in the Premier League in front of amazing fans,” he told the club’s official website.

“I think now as players, we just need to give the fans what they deserve. We need to put in the performances and make it even more special.

“Since I’ve been here, everything has been positive and now I need to get my head down and get this team higher up in the league.”

Newcastle have been an appalling start to the season and are one of only two teams yet to pick up a single win in the Premier League.

Rafa Benitez’s side start the weekend second from bottom and two points adrift from safety, with a tricky home clash with Watford up next.

Of Newcastle players that have made at least five Premier League appearances since the start of last season, only Florian Lejeune (7.05) has a higher WhoScored rating than Lascelles (7.04).
