Wayne Rooney to make shock England comeback

Wayne Rooney will be included in Gareth Southgate’s upcoming England squad for a one-off match against USA to celebrate the veteran striker’s international career, claims The Sun.

The 33-year-old announced his international retirement in August 2017 and has spent the last four months playing for DC United in Major League Soccer.

Rooney has been a revelation for DC United and fired the MLS franchise to an unlikely play-off berth before losing to Real Salt Lake on penalties in midweek.

The former Manchester United striker has already ruled out returning to the Premier League on loan but will turn out for England one last time for his 120th cap.

England play USA at Wembley on November 15 and the proceeds of the match will also go to the Wayne Rooney Foundation.

Southgate’s side will use their friendly against Rooney’s adopted new home as a warm-up for their UEFA Nations League encounter with Croatia three days later, which Rooney will play no part in.

Rooney played a direct hand in 18 goals in 21 MLS appearances for DC United this season.
