Manchester United enter race for Chelsea target

Manchester United have emerged as surprise summer suitors for Real Madrid striker and Chelsea target Alvaro Morata, reports The Daily Telegraph.

Jose Mourinho is keen to revamp his strike force in the summer following Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s potential career-ending injury and will not look to sign Morata and Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann.

Chelsea have been regularly linked with a move for Morata since Antonio Conte took over as manager at Stamford Bridge last summer and are expected to firm up their interest at the end of the season.

Morata only returned to Madrid last summer but has failed to usurp Karim Benzema in the pecking order despite arguably playing better than the Frenchman when called upon and his long-term future at the club is uncertain once again.

A summer move away seems on the cards for the Spain international, but United are now prepared to enter the race to bring the 24-year-old to Old Trafford and even willing to use David de Gea as bait for Madrid.

Of players that have scored at least five goals in La Liga this season, only Lionel Messi (1 every 74.9 minutes) requires fewer minutes per goal than Morata (1 every 88.2 minutes).
