Southampton bid £17.5m for Monaco striker

Southampton are using the money from Virgil van Dijk’s £75m departure to try and sign Monaco striker Guido Carrillo, reports The Sun.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s side are desperately short of goals and the need to sign a striker this month was made more pressing after Charlie Austin suffered a serious injury at the end of 2017.

Southampton have identified Monaco outcast Carrillo as the man they want to lead their line for the remainder of the season and have lodged a £17.5m bid for the 26-year-old.

Pellegrino worked with Carrillo during their time at Argentinean club Estudiantes, which helped Carrillo secure a move to Europe.

The 26-year-old is firmly behind Radamel Falcao in the pecking order for Monaco and that has limited him to just two starts in the league all season.

Of players that have scored at least four times in Ligue 1 this season, only four players have scored at a quicker rate than Carrillo (every 104.25 minutes of action).
