Southampton make audacious move for Tottenham forward
Southampton have made an enquiry to Tottenham about Erik Lamela’s availability, reports The Independent.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s side want to find out if there is a chance they can strike a deadline day deal for the Tottenham forward with Lucas Moura poised to join the Lilywhites.
An announcement of Moura’s arrival at Tottenham is imminent and his arrival could come at a cost of playing time to Lamela, even though both play on opposite flanks.
The 25-year-old is slowly working his way back from injury that left him sidelined for more than 12 months and has only managed two league starts this season.
Southampton have encountered problems in their attempts to sign Quincy Promes from Spartak Moscow in a club-record deal and are now exploring the chance of signing Lamela on loan for the rest of the season.
Pellegrino has already signed Guido Carrillo from Monaco this month and Lamela’s arrival would only bolster the growing Argentinean feel at Saint Marys.
Since joining Tottenham in August 2013, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have a slightly better win ratio in the Premier League without Lamela in the starting XI (58.9%) compared to when he has featured from the off (50%).
