Everton announce Onana capture to bolster midfield

Everton have completed the signing of hard-working midfielder Amadou Onana from LOSC Lille.

The Belgian, who joins the Toffees on a five-year deal, made 40 appearances for Lille last season in all competitions, albeit most of those coming off the bench. Onana also has a sole cap for his country, making his full international debut for the Red Devils against the Netherlands in June 2022.

For Lille last season, Onana put in an average of 3.2 tackles and 2.0 interceptions per 90, while also scoring one goal in Ligue 1.

Everton manager Frank Lampard said this about his latest signing after their 1-0 defeat to Chelsea: "He's a fantastically talented young player, he's got great attributes. We've worked very hard to bring him to the club and I think he's going to be a really big player for us."

With Everton keen to add reinforcements to their squad, Onana, at 6'5", can be deployed at centre-back, which may be useful for their defensive options, especially following the long-term injury to Ben Godfrey.

He will look to compete with Abdoulaye Doucoure, who was a mainstay for the Toffees in defensive midfield, for his position in the Everton squad as they look to improve on the near disaster that was last season as they were dragged into a relegation dogfight.
