Sunderland announced on Tuesday night their decision to sack Simon Grayson with the club in the bottom three.
Grayson left Preston to become Sunderland manager in June but the Black Cats have only won one of 15 matches in the Championship this season.
Sunderland are currently two points adrift of safety after only managing a 3-3 home draw with bottom side Bolton on Tuesday night and the club announced Grayson’s departure swiftly afterwards.
“Simon and his team have worked tirelessly to achieve the best for the football club during their time here,” chief executive Martin Bain told the club’s official website.
“While we hoped that Simon’s experience in the Football League would help us to a successful season, results have not been good enough for a club of this stature.
“In order for us to improve upon our current position we believe a fundamental change is necessary.”
After lasting four years as Preston manager, Grayson only managed 17 matches in charge of the Black Cats. While Grayson’s tenure was a disaster, Sunderland have been a sinking ship for many years now.
In fact, Sunderland have played 20 games at home in 2017 and failed to win a single game, leading for a total of three minutes in those matches.
