Everton sign Barcelona midfielder on loan

Everton have announced the arrival of Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes on a season-long loan deal.

The Portugal international is the third signing Everton have made on deadline day following the arrival of Bernard on a free transfer and permanent deal for Barcelona team-mate Yerry Mina.

“I’m delighted to sign for this fantastic club - it’s a good day for me,” he told the club’s official website. “Everton always was a big option for me, especially after speaking with the coach, Marco Silva.

“Every discussion we’ve had was very important in making me feel his confidence about my game. Everybody in Portugal know hows Marco Silva works and his abilities as a coach.

“For me, it was really good to speak to him because I know how good he is and I feel motivated to work with him and to play for Everton, a great club.”

Gomes, who is currently sidelined through injury, has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in the last 12 months after failing to settle at Barcelona.

Barcelona shelled out an initial £29.3m to sign Gomes from Valencia in 2016 but things haven’t gone to plan and the Spanish champions have been desperate to sell for some time now.

Ernesto Valverde’s side have already signed Arturo Vidal and Arthur to bolster their midfield options for the new campaign and even included Gomes in a failed bid for Manchester United’s Paul Pogba.

Gomes only started 23 league games across two campaigns for Barcelona, making a further 23 appearances as a substitute in that time. He only managed three league goals for the Blaugrana.

With his move in mind, it is worth adding shares of Gomes to your Football INDEX portfolios, as his price will rocket if he can rediscover the form he showed at Valencia.
