Manchester United target Bernardo Silva has revealed he hopes to return to boyhood club Benfica in the future after having his dream of playing in the first-team ended prematurely.
Silva, 22, rose through the ranks at Benfica after joining the youth academy in 2002 before breaking onto the scene and making his debut for the first-team in October 2013.
The Portugal international wouldn’t even make a handful of first-team appearances for Benfica before Monaco intervened and snapped him up in 2014 and Silva is now eyeing a return in the future.
“I want to wear the jersey again in Benfica,” Silva said in a Facebook Q&A on French radio station RMC. “One of my biggest regrets is that I could not help the club a lot. I hope to come back later. It is a goal.”
Silva has made great strides in his development at Monaco and his performances have even caught the eye of Premier League giants Manchester United this season, who are reportedly interested in signing the creative midfielder at the end of the season.
The Monaco No.10 is enjoying his finest season to date and his performances have been key to Monaco’s success this season as the club aim for their first league title since 2000.
In fact, Silva has registered more assists in the league this season (5) than in his two previous campaigns combined (4), whilst also chipping in with five goals. Only Joao Moutinho (12) has completed more through balls for Monaco in the league during his time at the club (10).
