Former Barca striker rules out La Liga return

New York City FC striker David Villa has ruled out a return to La Liga this winter following his sides’ failure to make the MLS playoffs.

The former Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Valencia striker has been heavily linked with a return to La Liga in recent weeks.

However, Villa has rebuffed any chances of him returning after admitting his time has “passed”.

“I’m disappointed on a sporting level but very happy with the experience and living in the US and playing for a club like New York City and in a league with the potential of MLS,” he told Mundo Deportivo.

“My time in La Liga has passed.

“Our objective was to be in the playoffs, so my goals aren’t important. What was important was the collective and it must be acknowledged that the team didn’t do well enough.”

While the rest of his team suffered, Villa lived up to expectation with 17 goals and a further five assists in an underperforming side. In fact, only three players scored more goals than the former Spain international.
