Mourinho set to become next United manager

Jose Mourinho has told his closest allies he is set to replace Louis van Gaal as the next Manchester United manager at the end of the season, according to Spanish newspaper El Confidencial.

While Van Gaal has certainly overcome the fiercest of criticism in recent weeks it is widely expected the Dutchman will step down at the end of the season after two underwhelming years at the helm.

United have reportedly been in discussions with Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes in recent weeks and it is now being suggested that the deal is almost done with Mourinho set to pocket a staggering €20m-a-year (£15.5m).

Mourinho has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea in December, but has previously been heavily linked with the Old Trafford hot seat. He is likely to be without Champions League football next season, with United six points adrift of the top four and without consecutive league wins since November.
