Tottenham failed with shock deadline day move for Chelsea striker

Chelsea rejected a stunning £25m bid from Tottenham for young striker Tammy Abraham on deadline day, Goal.com have revealed.

Tottenham became the only side in Premier League history since the summer transfer window was introduced in 2003 not to sign a single player.

Mauricio Pochettino wanted to bolster his offensive options for the new season and Tottenham were linked with moves for Manchester United's Anthony Martial and Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha.

However, it has now emerged that Tottenham tried to prise Abraham away from Premier League rivals Chelsea in a shock deadline day swoop.

Abraham is a product of Chelsea's fabled youth academy but has typically struggled for first-team opportunities at Stamford Bridge, spending the last two campaigns out on loan.

The 20-year-old was a revelation for Bristol City in the Championship during the 2016/17 campaign, netting 23 goals in England's second-tier.

Chelsea offloaded Abraham to Swansea last season to give the youngster regular playing time in the Premier League but he struggled to make the same impact.

Swansea were relegated and Abraham only managed five goals in 31 league appearances and he has since been linked with another loan stint in the Championship with Aston Vila.

After letting Michy Batshuayi join Valencia on loan this summer, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea are willing to let Abraham leave the club.

Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud are Chelsea's senior strike options and Abraham could be asked to play back-up to both when required by Maurizio Sarri.

Tottenham's interest at the end of the transfer window came as a shock but Chelsea categorically ruled out his departure to their London rivals.

Abraham is yet to appear for Chelsea in the league this season and hasn't even been named in their matchday squads for their first two Premier League matches.
