Payet worth treble fee paid, says West Ham chief

West Ham United co-chairman David Sullivan has hailed the signing of Dimitri Payet and believes the creator is now worth nearly three times the sum they paid over the summer.

The Hammers paid just £10.7m to bring Payet to east London from Marseille over the summer and the France international was an instant hit before suffering an ankle injury which stifled his and West Ham’s progress this season.

Payet, 28, was the most creative player in the Premier League prior to being sidelined at the start of November (47 chances created - level with Mesut Ozil) and Sullivan has called the Frenchman the best signing of his career.

“Payet is the signing of the season. He’s the best player I’ve signed in 25 years. He’s a £30m player,” Sullivan told the London Evening Standard.

“He’s a supreme footballer. He makes every player in our side play better. On his day, he’s world class, he’s unstoppable.

West Ham haven’t won a game since losing Payet to injury; a run that stretches six games. Their creator-in-chief is among the top six top rated players in the Premier League, according to WhoScored.com (7.68), but isn’t expected back until January.
