Di Maria blames Van Gaal for United failure

Manchester United’s club-record signing Angel di Maria has pointed the finger at manager Louis van Gaal for his failed 12 month stint at the club.

Di Maria, 27, joined United for nearly £60m from Real Madrid last summer, but failed to settle and signed for Paris Saint-Germain earlier this summer in a deal worth £45m.

The Argentina international only managed to show flashes of his potential during the 27 appearances he made in the Premier League last season and has blamed his time in Manchester on Van Gaal.

“Honestly, we were not happy,” Di Maria told Le Parisien. “At the beginning, we were a little. But then things became complicated.

“Life in England was a bit difficult. It is not easy for a South American. Some people get on fine, and for others it is harder to adapt.

“I didn’t get on very well with the coach, so I think the decision to join Paris was the best solution.

“After [the break-in] it wasn’t reasonable to stay. My family wasn’t happy. My daughter was suffering. So it was important to leave.”

Despite being considered one of the biggest transfer flops in the Premier League’s history, of players to have made at least 10 appearances, only Cesc Fabregas (160.6 mins) required fewer minutes per assist than the Argentine (164.5 mins) in England’s top-flight last season.
