Southampton eye Spurs defender

Southampton are interested in signing out of favour Tottenham defender Kevin Wimmer as they prepare to fend off interest in Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk, reports The Sun.

Claude Puel’s side are bracing themselves for big money offers for star defender Van Dijk in January, and while they don’t want to lose the Netherlands international, they are putting plans in place to cope without the 25-year-old.

Not only is Van Dijk’s future uncertain, captain Fonte is yet to sign a new deal with the club despite the fact talks over a renewal started in August. The 32-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer and his current deal is due to expire at the end of next season.

The Saints are therefore looking at alternative options and have earmarked a move for Wimmer in case they lose either defender. Wimmer has struggled to make any impact at Spurs since joining from Cologne in 2015 for £4.3m.

Of Tottenham players to have started a Premier League game this season Wimmer has the lowest WhoScored rating (6.26).
