West Ham have announced David Moyes as their new manager less than 24 hours after sacking Slaven Bilic.
The Hammers made the decision on Monday to part ways with Bilic after dropping into the relegation zone and have turned to former Manchester United boss Moyes in a bid to boost their chances of survival this season.
Moyes has been out of work since leading Sunderland down to the Championship last season but has now secured a job back in the Premier League on a deal until the end of the current campaign.
“I would like to welcome David to West Ham United,” joint-chairman David Sullivan told the club’s official website.
“This is a unique position for David Gold and myself – it is the first time in almost eight years at West Ham United that we have appointed a new manager during the season.
“We need somebody with experience, knowledge of the Premier League and the players in it, and we believe David is the right man to turn things around and get the best out of the players at the club. He is highly regarded and respected within the game, and will bring fresh ideas, organisation and enthusiasm.
“He proved with Everton that he has great qualities and we feel that West Ham United is a club that will give David the platform to display those qualities again.”
Moyes will immediately be tasked with organising West Ham’s porous defence. The Hammers have conceded the most goals in the Premier League this season (23), while also committing the most errors that have led to an opposition goal since August 2015 (25).
The results from West Ham’s next three matches could well dictate how the rest of the season will pan out for the club with games against Watford, Leicester and Everton to come after the international break.
However, after that spell the Hammers start a daunting run of matches against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal.
