Dzeko reveals why he snubbed Chelsea

Roma striker Edin Dzeko has revealed he was flattered by interest shown by Chelsea in January but could not leave his ‘unreal’ life in Italy.

Antonio Conte’s side were in advanced talks to sign Dzeko from Roma at the end of last month but failed to agree personal terms with the former Manchester City striker.

Dzeko has established himself as one of the best goalscorers in Italy since moving to the Eternal City in 2015 and the Bosnia international has revealed he couldn’t leave his life behind in Rome.

“There was speculation, some untrue and even some ridiculous claims,” Dzeko told Bosnian website Klix.

“I really enjoyed the interest of Chelsea, a club I respect and appreciate. In the last few weeks, so many stories have been told about my departure from Rome, and I am still here today.

“Finally, I’m happy to stay in Rome, because it became my home and an incredible part of my life, life in an almost unreal way.

“I can never forget it, and for this city I am bound by some of the happiest moments in my life. I felt the joy of fatherhood for the first time here when my little girl Una was born, and my son Dani was born here too. Roma is part of my life now, and it always will be.”

Chelsea eventually swopped for Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud in a deal worth a reported £18m to put any suggestions of a summer move to bed.

Dzeko has struggled to hit his best form for Roma this season, netting just 10 goals in 23 league appearances.
