Rooney’s record breaking afternoon ends on sour note

Wayne Rooney became the 10th player to make 500 appearances for Manchester United on Saturday, but his day was overshadowed by Norwich City’s shock 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.

United made Rooney the most expensive teenager in world football when they paid nearly £30m for his services in 2003 and the forward has every major honour to show for his career, a part from the FA Cup.

The 30-year-old looked destined to leave the club on two separate occasions but has remained at Old Trafford and is now the United and England captain.

Sir Bobby Charlton, who made 758 appearances for the club, presented Rooney with a special plaque prior to United’s match against Norwich, which they would go on to lose.

Rooney was barely involved during the match and is now without a league goal at Old Trafford since the end of August.
