Tottenham target signs new deal

Roma have confirmed Nicolo Zaniolo has put pen to paper on a new five-year deal running until the summer of 2024.

Zaniolo’s previous deal was not due to expire until 2023 but Roma have moved to secure his long-term future after a summer dominated by reports of a move away.

The Italy international was a revelation for Roma last season during his first year at the club and his displays caught the attention of Premier League side Tottenham.

There were suggestions Zaniolo could be included in a possible player-plus-cash swap deal involving Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld but nothing materialised.

Zaniolo is regarded as one of Italian football’s brightest prospects and the 20-year-old insists leaving Roma was never on his mind this summer.

“A year ago it was an easy decision to choose Roma, and today it is even easier – after a season that helped me fall in love with this team and this city,” Zaniolo told the club’s official website.

“I would like to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to tie myself even more closer to these colours – it is exactly what I wanted.”
