Tottenham fear star man will leave

Tottenham are refusing to relax their strict wage structure regardless of fears that Toby Alderweireld will leave, reports the Daily Mail.

The Belgium international hasn’t featured for club or country since sustaining a hamstring injury in the 3-1 win over Real Madrid last month and the defender isn’t expected back in action until the New Year.

Alderweireld has a little over 18 months left to run on his current deal with Spurs and the north London side are understandably keen to tie him down to a new long term deal.

However, even with Spurs offering to bring the centre-back in line with the club’s top earners Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris, they are reluctant to break the wage structure to accommodate the 28-year-old.

As a result, talks have reached an impasse for the time being as Alderweireld looks to negotiate a better deal with the club.

This leaves Spurs in a sticky as they run the risk of losing Alderweireld on a free in 2019 or instead opt to cash in at the end of the season.

Spurs do have an option to extend his deal by a further 12 months, but in doing so would activate a release clause that would allow Alderweireld, who has been courted by Manchester City, to leave for just £25m immediately after this was triggered.
