Arsenal dealt blow to hopes of signing RB Leipzig defender

Arsenal's hopes of landing centre-back Dayot Upamecano have ended after the defender penned a new deal with RB Leipzig.

The Frenchman was set to be at the centre of a mad transfer scramble this summer, with the Gunners not the only side monitoring Upamecano.

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester United had all been credited with an interest in the 21-year-old, who is now contracted to RB Leipzig until 2023.

"Centre half Dayot Upamecano has signed a contract extension at RB Leipzig, with his new deal now running until June 2023," a statement read on the club's official website.

"The France U21 international joined Leipzig in January 2017 from Red Bull Salzburg and quickly established himself as a key player."

Upamecano was a key man for RB Leipzig last season as they finished third in 2019/20 to secure a Champions League spot, making more passes per game (70.1) than any other player aged 23 and under.

The news will come as a boost for RB Leipzig as they gear up to face Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League next month.
