The Manchester United board has come out in defence of head coach Jose Mourinho after reports on Friday night suggested that he would be sacked regardless of the outcome of today’s Premier League meeting with Newcastle, it’s been reported by the Guardian.
Mourinho is under increasing pressure to turn United’s fortunes around and after a four-match winless run, rumours have hinted that the Portuguese boss will be relieved of his duties this weekend.
United host Newcastle in today’s late kick off, but multiple club sources suggests Mourinho still has the backing of the hierarchy.
Defeat at West Ham last week left United in 10th with just 10 points to their name, the joint-lowest ever points total after just seven matches.
A pitiful display in the midweek 0-0 draw with Valencia could well have been the straw that broke the camel’s back, but even with rumours of his imminent departure, the United boss looks to have his supporters in the club.
United will hope to end a four-match winless run against the Magpies today, which saw them knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Derby.
