Manchester City midfielder poised to sign contract extension

Ilkay Gundogan wants to prolong his stay at Manchester City and expects to sign a contract extension at the start of next year, claims The Sun.

The Germany international has two years left to run on his current £90,000-a-week contract but is settled in England and wants to extend his stay.

Gundogan has endured an injury plagued career but has proved a valuable asset to Guardiola since joining the club in in 2016.

Guardiola is on the market for a new central midfielder and there have even been suggestions Gundogan could be used as a makeweight to sign Ajax starlet Frenkie de Jong.

However, the 28-year-old expects City to open contract talks about a bumper new deal after the busy festive period.

The former Borussia Dortmund midfielder has only started 28 of a possible 85 league matches since joining City, albeit he was seriously injured during his first season.

Of City players that have started at least half of their Premier League matches this season, only John Stones (95.2%) has a higher pass success rate than Gundogan (93.8%).
