Gareth Southgate will keep a close eye on Danny Ings’ performances for Southampton with a view to drafting the former Liverpool striker in to his next England squad.
Ings has endured a nightmare few years with injury but left Liverpool to join Southampton in the summer to kickstart his career.
The 26-year-old, who only made 14 Premier League appearances during three years at Liverpool, has made a good start to life at Southampton.
Ings has scored two goals in four league games for Mark Hughes’ side and is already in Southgate’s thoughts for the next round of international matches scheduled to take place in October.
There were suggestions Callum Wilson and Troy Deeney should have been included in England’s squad for upcoming matches against Spain and Switzerland.
Both strikers have made impressive starts to the season but Southgate has ruled out an international call-up for Deeney, instead focusing on blooding through younger forwards.
“I think Callum is another player we worked with in the Under-21s so we know a lot about Callum. He’s certainly one we have to keep monitoring,” The Daily Telegraph quote Southgate as saying.
“I think Troy is a player who really suits the way Watford play and I’m a big fan of his. But I think that we play slightly differently, and I think that, for me, the next forward players that I see that should be challenging are some of the younger ones.”
Wilson and Ings are managing more shots per game in the Premier League (3.5) than any other English player this season, netting four goals between them.
He's actually on loan to Southampton.
