Real Madrid sign Manchester City starlet

Real Madrid announced on Sunday evening the arrival of Manchester City starlet Brahim Diaz on a six-and-a-half-year deal until the summer of 2023.

Diaz had entered the final six months of his City deal and refused to renew with the Premier League champions due to a lack of playing time.

The 19-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Madrid all season and Santiago Solari’s side have finally got a deal over the line after agreeing an initial €17m (£15m fee).

Madrid may also have to cough up as much as €7m (£6.3m) in performance related add-ons, while City included a 15% sell-on fee and will even recoup 40% of any future sale if Diaz moves to Manchester United.

Guardiola’s side have sought to prevent Diaz from joining their city rivals after United expressed an interest in Jadon Sancho 18 months ago.

Diaz’s departure is another blow to City’s attempts of creating a pathway from their academy to the first-team, following on from Sancho’s move to Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2017.

The underage Spain international only made three appearances in the Carabao Cup for City this season, but the teenager scored twice and picked up the WhoScored Man of the Match award in their 2-0 win over Fulham in November.
