West Ham to rival Spurs for Ligue 1 frontman

West Ham are prepared to spend big in order to secure the services of promising Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi, according to the London Evening Standard.

Both the Hammers and London rivals Tottenham have been strongly linked with a move for the Belgium international, who has established himself as a first team regular for the French side.

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic has supposedly been promised £20m to spend on a new striker this summer, with the 22-year-old top of the Croatian's wish list.

Reports suggest, however, that Spurs and Marseille have already held initial talks over a possible transfer of Batshuayi, though if the north London side secure the services of Saido Berahino, that could pave the way for the Belgian to move to West Ham.

The Hammers could call on Dimitri Payet to help convince his former teammate to join him at West Ham, though if Spurs secure a top-four finish, the lure of Champions League football could be too much for the young striker to turn down.

Marseille would be keen to retain the services of Batshuayi, whose 13 goals have been bettered only by Zlatan Ibrahimovic (23) in Ligue 1 this season.
