West Ham are set to beat off competition from Everton to sign former Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra on Wednesday, claims Sky Sports.
Evra has been a free agent since his contract with Marseille was terminated in November for kicking a home supporter prior to their Europa League game against Portuguese side Guimaraes earlier that month.
UEFA banned the former France international from all European club competition for the rest of the season but that does not prevent him from playing domestic football, which has put Everton and West Ham on red alert for his services.
Everton manager Sam Allardyce is desperate to sign a recognised left-back with Leighton Baines injured but Evra would reportedly prefer to move to London, putting West Ham in the box seat for his signature.
The 36-year-old, who spent eight years at United, worked hard on maintaining his fitness levels in the Mlddle East through the winter and is now poised to return to the Premier League four years after he left to join Juventus.
Evra may not be able to perform at his best for the Hammers but he will certainly bring necessary experience and an infectious attitude in the dressing room that should help David Moyes’ side.
In the last four Premier League campaigns, only Crystal Palace (36) have committed more errors that have led to an opposition goal more times than West Ham (34).
