Chelsea youngster joins Championship side on loan

Chelsea have confirmed Jake Clarke-Salter has joined Championship side Birmingham on a season-long loan deal.

Clarke-Salter has first signed a new contract extension to pledge his future to Chelsea until the summer of 2022.

The 21-year-old’s previous deal had two years left to run but Frank Lampard’s side have rewarded the England Under-21 captain with an extra 12 months.

Clarke-Salter spent last season on loan with Vitesse where he developed into an integral player for the Eredivisie outfit.

The Chelsea defender was rewarded with the captain’s armband at the European U21 Championships this summer, though Aidy Bothrooyd’s young charges failed to impress.

Despite the fact Chelsea are unable to sign any new players this summer, Lampard has sanctioned loan moves away for the likes of Clarke-Salter and Ethan Ampadu in the last week.

Of players that started at least three matches at this summer’s U21 Euros, only two players had a better pass success rate than Clarke-Salter (94.2%).

On loan at Vitesse last season, Clarke-Salter made 28 league starts and finished the campaign with an aerial duel success rate of 62.2%.
