De Ligt to make decision on Manchester United transfer imminently
Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt is set to make a decision on his future in the coming days amid interest from both Manchester United and Barcelona, claims The Daily Telegraph.
De Ligt has emerged as the most sought after young centre-back in Europe this season after his outstanding displays for Ajax.
The Netherlands international captained Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals at the age of just 19 and his leadership qualities are what United are desperately crying out for.
Barcelona have been the clear frontrunners for De Ligt’s signature in the last few months but they are unwilling to improve on their best offer.
There is a feeling in the Netherlands that United would be a better move for De Ligt despite the state of the club and the teenager would also stand to make more money at Old Trafford.
Barcelona are reportedly convinced Ajax sporting director and former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Saar is steering De Ligt in the direction of United.
De Ligt's agent, Mino Raiola, would also stand to make considerably more money if his client moved to United than Barcelona.
Nevertheless, signing De Ligt would be a huge coup for United and reiterate they are still capable of attracting the best players in the world despite not being able to offer Champions League football next season.
De Ligt finished the 2018/19 campaign as the second highest WhoScored rated centre-back in Eredivisie (7.32). He also scored three goals and registered one assist in 33 league games.
