Ozil’s Arsenal future will be decided at the end of the season
Mesut Ozil will not leave Arsenal this month but his future will be re-assessed at the end of the season, claims the London Evening Standard.
The former Germany international only signed a new long-term deal worth in excess of £300,000-a-week 12 months ago but his Arsenal future has been the subject of intense debate all season.
Ozil has struggled to nail down a regular starting berth under Unai Emery this season and there were suggestions the Gunners would try to flog the 30-year-old this month.
Selling Ozil in January was always going to prove a tough ask given the finances required to prise him away from the Emirates.
Emery has been impressed by Ozil’s desire to fight for his future at the club and the Arsenal manager will give him the rest of the season to prove his worth.
While a January sale has been ruled out by everyone concerned, Arsenal will re-evaluate Ozil’s position at the club at the end of the season.
Ozil’s agent, Dr Erkut Sogut, even revealed on Wednesday that his client is open to extending his current deal, though it’s unlikely the feeling is reciprocated by the Gunners.
The Arsenal No.10 has started 12 Premier League games this season but has only started three of the club’s last 12 matches.
Despite a lack of first-team action this season, Ozil is only one goal shy of matching his tally from last season’s Premier League campaign (4).
