Crystal Palace have fended off competition from their Premier League rivals to sign Newcastle United winger Andros Townsend for £13m, claims The Guardian.
Townsend, 28, only joined Newcastle from Tottenham at the start of the year but failed to ensure their Premier League status last season despite impressing on the pitch for Rafa Benitez’s side.
The England international included a £13m release clause into his Newcastle deal to allow the winger to return to the Premier League if the Magpies were relegated to the Championship and Palace have activated that clause.
Townsend finished as Newcastle’s highest rated player in the Premier League last season (7.35) after playing a direct hand in six league goals (four goals, two assists) in 13 appearances.
