Former Premier League flop in race for European golden boot

Former Premier League flop Anthony Modeste scored a hat-trick in Cologne’s 4-2 win over Hertha Berlin on Saturday afternoon to rocket himself up the scoring charts in Europe’s top five leagues and put him in contention for the golden boot.

Modeste, 28, who formerly endured a disastrous stint with Blackburn in the Premier League, has been scoring for run in the Bundesliga this season, with his latest haul meaning he has now scored 22 goals in 25 Bundesliga matches for a side fighting for a place in the table that would put them in the Europa League next season.

Incredibly, the Frenchman has now scored more goals in the Bundesliga than Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski (21) and is now only one behind Borussia Dortmund star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. However, Modeste shouldn’t just have his eye on those in Germany’s top flight but also those on the continent.

As it stands, only Edinson Cavani (27), Lionel Messi and Aubameyang (both 23) have scored more goals in Europe’s top five leagues than Modeste, although all three of his rivals have the chance to extend their lead when they all play at various times on Sunday.

The name Anthony Modeste may not ring a bell to many supporters in the Premier League but his goalscoring exploits will certainly have put him on the map this season and it wouldn’t be entirely unsurprising to see a side in England express an interest in his services in the summer if he can continue his phenomenal goalscoring form.
