Tottenham star stalling on new deal

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld is stalling on putting pen to paper on a new contract for the north London side, reports the Times.

The Belgian centre-back has been a revelation for Mauricio Pochettino’s side following his arrival from Southampton in 2015 and Spurs are keen to tie him down to a new deal.

However, Alderweireld has twice rejected the chance to extend his stay with the club and his representative have held no recent talks with the Spurs hierarchy over a contract.

Alderweireld currently has a release clause inserted into his contract at Spurs, which would allow him to leave next summer for €30m.

Spurs have the option to extend his current deal for another year, but Alderweireld is keen to keep the release clause in his contract, which the club are against.

This news will appeal to Manchester City, who have been linked with a move for the 28-year-old, along with teammates Kyle Walker and Danny Rose.

Tottenham are understandably keen to retain Alderweireld’s services and will hope to come to an agreement over his future in the coming months.
