Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney turned down an offer from Beijing Guoan in the summer, according to the Chinese Super League team’s chairman.
Rooney, 31, still has three years remaining on his £300,000-a-week contract at Old Trafford but has dropped down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho this season and his future at the club is now in doubt.
According to Guoan’s honorary chairman, Luo Ning, Rooney was offered a route out of United before the season started but their approach was knocked back.
“We indeed made an approach for Rooney at the beginning of the season but he’s informed us that he wants to stay in Manchester United,” Ning told a Beijing radio sports show, via The Daily Mail.
“Rooney says he’ll keep playing in the Premier League as long as his health allows. We even met with his agent [Paul Stretford].”
Rooney’s drop in form this season has even seen the veteran forward drop to the bench under new England manager Gareth Southgate, but the Three Lions captain is poised to return to the starting XI against Scotland on Friday.
Despite barely featuring for United in the last few months, only Adam Lallana (5) has registered more assists in the Premier League this season of English players than Rooney (4).
