Newcastle manager Benitez wants £15m-rated MLS star

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez wants to sign Atlanta United creator Miguel Almiron in a bid to salvage the club’s season, reports The Sun.

The Magpies have made a poor start to the campaign and look set for another year battling relegation after enduring a disappointing summer in the transfer market.

Benitez has set his sights on Almiron in a bid to steer the club away from the bottom three but it will depend on whether Newcastle owner Mike Ashley coughs up funds for transfers in January.

The Paraguay international is approaching the final 12 months of his existing Atlanta deal and has already been heavily linked with January moves to the likes of Arsenal.

Atlanta are one of four sides left battling for MLS glory and Almiron will be key to their chances of success in the competition.

The 25-year-old has played a direct hand in 24 goals in 34 league appearances this season (13 goals, 11 assists).

Furthermore, only Zlatan Ibrahimovic (7.84) and Carlos Vela (7.80) have garnered higher Whocsored ratings than Almiron in MLS this term (7.75).

Lastly, the Atlanta star is the only player in MLS to reach double figures for WhoScored Man of the Match awards in 2018 (10).

Newcastle have struggled for goals this season, only scoring nine times in 12 league matches, and Almiron will certainly help improve that tally if he can transfer his MLS form to England.
