Huddersfield boss turns down Wolfsburg

Huddersfield manager David Wagner has turned down an advance from Wolfsburg to take over from Valerien Ismael in the winter break, reports The Daily Mirror.

The Bundesliga strugglers only promoted Ismael from his role as U23 coach at the start of November to replace Dieter Hecking but Wolfsburg’s struggles have continued under the 41-year-old.

Ismael will still be in charge of Wolfsburg for their final game of 2016 on Tuesday against Gladbach but is expected to be replaced during the winter break as they look to arrest their alarming decline.

Wolfsburg had earmarked Wagner, who was Jurgen Klopp’s assistant manager at Borussia Dortmund, as their top target but the Huddersfield manager has reportedly rejected the chance to return to Germany.

The Terriers are currently in fourth place but already nine points adrift of the automatic promotion places, whereas Wolfsburg are fourth from bottom in the Bundesliga and just one point clear of safety.
