West Ham United have entered talks to extend Dimitri Payet’s stay, the club has announced.
Payet, 28, only put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Hammers when he joined from Marseille over the summer but he has already emerged as one of the players’ of the season and Slaven Bilic is keen to avoid any interest from rival clubs in the summer.
Reports had emerged suggesting Payet’s representatives were demanding a new £120,000-a-week deal, but West Ham have released a statement denying such, although they revealed contract talks have begun.
“Following reports in today’s media, West Ham United like to clarify that at no time have Dimitri Payet or his agent made any demands to the club over a new contract,” the statement read on their official website.
“However, the club can confirm that due to Dmitri’s outstanding impact since his arrival at the Boleyn Ground, they have initiated amicable and productive talks about an improvement and extension to his contract."
The Frenchman has been in electric form this season and is currently West Ham’s top goalscorer in the Premier League (6). Furthermore, only four players have created more chances across Europe’s top five leagues than Payet this season (67).
