Chelsea lead race in shock deal for Man City icon Aguero

Chelsea are the frontrunners to sign Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero on a free transfer this summer, claims The Daily Mail.

Aguero will leave City when his deal expires at the end of the season after a decade at the club with a long list of suitors after the 32-year-old.

Barcelona are reportedly keen on brining Aguero to Camp Nou as part of their attempt to convince fellow Argentine Leo Messi to remain at the club.

There are also several clubs in Serie A interested in Aguero, who has scored more goals in Premier League history than any other foreign player, but the veteran's preference is to remain in England.

Suggestions of a controversial cross-town swap to Manchester United have been rubbished but Chelsea are serious on landing Aguero.

Chelsea have, like many of Europe's elite clubs, earmarked Erling Haaland as a top transfer target this summer but there are other clubs ahead of them in the race for his signature.

Thomas Tuchel wants to sign a new striker this summer regardless whether they miss out on Haaland given Timo Werner's difficult first season in England.

Part of the reason why City have decided to end a 10-year affiliation with Aguero is down to growing concerns over his fitness.

Aguero has been limited to just eight appearances in the Premier League this season and only half of those have been starts.

The Argentina international has generally struggled with injuries throughout his career, reaching 30 starts in just three of his 10 league campaigns for City.

Nevertheless, Aguero ranks fourth on the all-time goalscoring list in the Premier League and against no team has he scored more career goals than Chelsea (15).
