Managerless Middlesbrough are weighing up a move for former Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink as Aitor Karanka’s replacement, reveals The Daily Telegraph.
The Premier League strugglers made the decision to relieve Karanka of his duties after nearly four years at the helm ahead of their clash with Manchester United on Sunday and are likely to appoint a new boss during the international break that commences next week.
Boro chairman Steve Gibson is looking to benefit from the same form that Leicester enjoyed after dismissing Claudio Ranieri earlier this month and are keen to appoint the right manager that can provide that boost.
Hiddink, 70, was ironically touted as a possible Ranieri successor at Leicester before they rewarded assistant manager Craig Shakespeare with the job until the end of the season and now the Dutchman is a candidate for the job at the Riverside stadium.
The 70-year-old hasn’t managed a club since completing his role as interim Chelsea manager at the end of last season, although has continued working with the current Premier League champions in some capacity since.
Hiddink finished his time at Chelsea only managing two wins in his last 12 matches in all competitions. One of his immediate tasks would be to improve Middlesbrough’s form in front of goal. They have only scored 19 goals in the league this season – the joint fewest in the top six tiers of English football.
