Stuttgart complete signing of highly regarded Argentine youngster
Stuttgart have announced the signing of Argentinian midfielder Santiago Ascacibar on a five-year deal via their official website.
The 20-year-old has penned a contract until 2022 having been the subject of interest across the continent this summer, having previously been linked with a move to Zenit.
The combative midfielder arrives from Primera Division outfit Estudiantes, with whom he built a reputation as a feisty ball-winner, with his playing style and diminutive stature drawing comparisons with compatriot Javier Mascherano.
The youngster made 24 league appearances in the Argentine top-flight last season, averaging 3.1 tackles and 2.6 interceptions per game.
VfB sporting director Michael Reschke told the club’s official website: "We made the decision to commit Santiago Ascacíbar with great conviction, with both the scouting department of VfB and myself having watched the player for a long time. As a matter of principle, you can not expect miracles from a young player, but Santiago will be able to help us this season. And in the future, that will be even more possible.”
Ascacibar said of his move: "The Bundesliga is among the best leagues in the world. I've heard a lot from VfB Stuttgart, have also seen great pictures of the fantastic fans and the impressive atmosphere of the games. I'm looking forward to wearing the VfB jersey."
