Arsenal pair offered new deals

Arsenal will offer Per Mertesacker and Santi Cazorla new contracts, despite their current injury concerns, reports the Times.

Mertesacker is yet to make an appearance for Arsenal this season owing to a knee problem sustained in the summer.

Cazorla meanwhile has been sidelined since October due to an ankle injury and the pair will miss the Gunners’ trip to Preston on Saturday.

The duo’s current deals run until the end of the season, but both are expected to put pen to paper on a new 12-month contract this month.

“We have an option on both of them,” Wenger is quoted as saying in the Times. “And I think we will take it. We need to have a balance between youth and experience and they are important in that as well.”

While Mertesacker, 32, would likely be a backup upon his return to fitness, Cazorla, 32, is a key man for the Gunners, with Arsenal unbeaten in his seven league starts this season, winning six, while Arsenal have lost three of 13 he has not started.
