Alderweireld's Tottenham future in doubt after Juventus snub
Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham has been thrown into doubt with the defender set to be left out of the squad due to face Juventus on Tuesday night, claims The Daily Telegraph.
The Belgium international recently recovered from the longest injury lay-off of his career but wasn't even named on the bench against Arsenal despite declaring himself ready to play in the build up.
It was thought that Mauricio Pochettino was saving Alderweireld for the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie with Juventus in midweek but it has now emerged he will stay in London.
There have been murmurs of unrest behind the scenes as Alderweireld seeks to be made one of the club’s top earners in order to commit his long-term future to the club.
His current £50,000-a-week contract is due to expire at the end of next season, although Tottenham have an option to extend it by a further 12 months.
Alderweireld has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League since moving to Tottenham in 2015 and the 28-year-old would not be short of suitors.
No player averages more accurate long balls per Premier League game this season than Alderweireld (9.1).
